It’s good to watch for scammers taking tricks too far as we approach Halloween and at all times.
There are so many methods that scammers use to separate you from your money or identity. A popular one involves falsely representing themselves as employees of your electric utility, threatening you with disconnection, and demanding that you “pay your bill” in a manner that funnels money into illegitimate hands.
At Tipmont, we ask that you exercise caution during any conversation concerning your funds or personal information and always consider the context of what you’re being asked to do. You should particularly be on the lookout for requests that involve abnormal payment methods, such as gift cards or cryptocurrency.
Tipmont REMC also will never call and request sensitive personal information over the phone. This includes your bank information and / or credit card number. While we might call to remind you that a payment is due, we would never demand payment over the phone, in person, or at a particular physical location. If you are facing disconnection, Tipmont is required by law to provide written notice at least 14 days before that happens. If someone tells you that your power will be disconnected if you don’t pay “right now,” it’s not us. It’s someone who intends to do wrong with your money, information, or identity.
